Andrew Lownie -Welcome to the Festival followed by: "Stalin’s Englishman: the Lives of Guy Burgess"
Tuesday 8th May 7.15pm for 8pm
Memorial Hall, School Lane HP8 4JJ
Journalist, publisher and literary agent Andrew Lownie will be discussing the man who has often been dismissed as the least important of the Cambridge Spy Ring.
In his prize-winning biography, which took thirty years to research, Andrew shows that not only was Burgess a fascinating character in his own right – his circle included George Orwell, Michael Redgrave, Lucian Freud, John Maynard Keynes, Stephen Spender, WH Auden and EM Forster – but he was regarded as the most important member of the spy ring.
The book was biography of the year in the Guardian, Times, Spectator, Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday.
