About the event
Tony Ferguson left his native Tyrone in September 1973, bound for the East Riding of Yorkshire. He earned a BSc in Economics at the University of Hull, sparking a lifelong love affair with The Tigers of Hull City AFC.
He worked for over forty years in technology, holding several international management positions with global corporations including Burroughs, Unisys and Accenture.
In fulfilment of a boyhood promise, he has written three books which recount the remarkable fighting career of his grandfather. In seven years from 1916-1923, he fought in three wars for three different armies.
Somme Story is the first book in the trilogy of Andy Symington: Tyrone’s Most Wanted Man series.
Honourably discharged from the British army with wounds and shellshock, he joined the IRA and fought as a guerilla against the British in rural Tyrone and Fermanagh (Volume 2: Irish War of Independence.)
When the Irish turned their guns on each other, he joined Michael Collins’ Free State Army and fought against the IRA (Volume 3: Irish Civil War.)
An accomplished and charismatic speaker, he regularly gives talks on a range of historical subjects, including the Somme and the Irish War of Independence.
