Carolyne 2018

Carolyne Larrington reveals how the world’s biggest TV series – and the books that inspired them – has surprising parallels in real medieval history, literature and myth. From the Army of the Dead to Daenerys’s Dragons, George R R Martin’s world has been constructed with a historian’s understanding of real-world politics, belief and power.

Carolyne Larrington is Professor of Medieval European Literature at the University of Oxford and teaches medieval English literature at St John's College. As well as writing about Game of Thrones – Winter is Coming: The Medieval World of Game of Thrones (2015) – she has also published The Land of the Green Man: A Journey through the Supernatural Landscapes of the British Isles (2015), and most recently The Norse Myths: A Guide to Viking and Scandinavian Gods and Heroes (2017).
